Today we travelled to the ruin of Kilroot parish church, dating back to around 421AD it’s seen some sunsets! The earliest headstone read 1766 but I’m sure there were older still, a lot of the stones have crumbled beyond recognition.
It’s great to live close to such a rich and vibrant history. After researching this area I found that as a young man in 1695, Jonathan Swift the author of the classic book Gulliver’s Travels, was appointed prebend of the parish of Kilroot. He served there for a year, where he is said to have written the Tale of a Tub.
Well that’s another brief look at some local history.
